The Game (2024)

The Cockpit, 28th September, 2024
This project began as a little bit of consultancy into an opera mixing games (in the sense of video games) and opera.
Composed by Elif Karlidag, with a libretto by Sam Redway, it was a good example of how directing contemporary opera is a balance between creating a great staging that lifts the piece up and making sure that all the practical needs (especially a complex contemporary score) are achieved.
I was rather pleased when someone said I'd managed to capture a balance between British and continental staging styles. I can't say I'd done so intentionally, but it seemed a good way to express the abstract/absurd and more naturalistic moments.
So I'm taking it for my website.
